Path to healing an auto immune disease
Can I be completely healed from an auto immune disease? I’m on the path to finding out. Since I discovered that my psoriasis is an auto immune disease, I’ve been researching the causes and treatments and have started on a path to healing.
I hope that the treatments I share may work for you and your body’s dis-ease. I’ve found that it’s not just one thing that has helped, but that coming at it with different modalities has resulted in a comprehensive plan that works.
Please remember that I have been following a holistic lifestyle for over 20 years. I have gathered a network of different practitioners that have their specialties that work well together. If some of these are new to you, just pick one, do some research and find someone in your area that you can sit down with, ask questions and become educated.
Natural Health Nutritionist
At the height of my anxiety and raging breakout of the itchy red rash, I visited the Certified Nutritionist who has helped me for the past 11 years. She uses muscle response testing in her practice to identify which area of the body is weak and what supplements will help support healing. Several organs in my body were weak, but it was the adrenals that were causing the problems. It seems I had gotten on this loop of stress that caused my adrenals to continuously pump out cortisol, which gave me the constant fight-or-flight anxiety and depression.
First course of support were highly nutritional supplements to calm the adrenals. Because she has treated so many people over 30 years, she mentioned that she had a client who was getting help from psoriasis through acupuncture.
I’ve been seeing an acupuncturist for over 8 years, but only occasionally. She was confident that acupuncture would support the nervous system and open pathways to allow my body to help itself.
As I said, I used to only see her occasionally, mostly when I was sick and then only for a few appointments. My outlook has changed now that I have been chronically sick for several months. She and I talked at length about how Western society as a whole has fallen into the rut of dealing with the body when it’s sick instead of leading from an plan of wellness.
Even though I’ve been incorporating holistic health for over 20 years, I’m just now beginning to understand my part in making my body as healthy as it can be and not letting it fall into such a state of illness.
Traditional Chinese Medicine
When the acupuncturist looked at the severity of my psoriasis, she referred me to Diana Hermann, owner of Zi Zai Dermatology. Diana treats a variety of skin conditions through Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Treatment has come from inside and outside. I’m drinking a liquid prescription of Chinese herbs in the morning and at night and using a topical ointment with scalp tincture. The herbal prescription has been created by Diana specifically for my symptoms.
If you are not in the Colorado area to visit Diana’s clinic, she has a link to finding a TCM Dermatologist in other states and countries.
After just three weeks of treatment, my psoriasis has improved dramatically:
The itching has decreased, the skin no longer feels like hard layered scales and feels like real skin again. I’ve noticed that the only time I have flareups is when I get stressed or eat something that my body reacts to. Diana has said that I will never be completely healed from psoriasis but that it will go into remission. I may go a few years with no problems and then a virus or some other trigger will create the flareup. When that happens, I will return to her clinic and get the TCM support I need.
For now, I have an important role in my recovery. Which leads me to the next important piece of my path to healing.
Leaky Gut Diet
I know that the Traditional Chinese Medicine that I am taking is the biggest factor to healing my psoriasis. This is an auto immune disease, which means it didn’t just appear but has been a low level chronic condition in my body for years. I know that I had a personal role in the breakdown of my body and I have a big part in the continued healing of my body if I want to have a long term recovery and healthy future.
A friend on Facebook has a website she ‘likes’ frequently; Dr. Josh Axe. His website is filled with great information, recipes and health tips for numerous health conditions.
He also has a step-by-step program where I’ve learned the type of nutritional program I need to follow to heal my leaky gut specific to my immune system. I’ve been on it for 3 weeks and I feel so much better. Because my body revealed a chronic illness in a very specific way, I was ready to follow a simple healthy diet to heal from the inside out.
I hope one or all of these things may help you as you begin your path to healing. Do not become overwhelmed by the amount of information I’ve shared. Just research one topic at a time and find practitioners in your area that can help you. Use the information on Dr. Axe’s website to learn more how nutrition plays a big role in overall health.
