Who’s responsible for your health
I spent 10 months last year taking Traditional Chinese Medicine in an attempt to heal the fiery red, scaly patches of psoriasis on the back of my neck, in my ears and on my legs. I found relief within just a few months. However I could never fully heal the last 10%.
I told the practitioner that I felt there was something sabotaging the healing process. I felt certain that my diet had a part to play in the disease. I had placed myself on a 3 month protocol for healing a leaky gut and was seeing some good results. I decided to stop taking the Traditional Chinese Medicine and found a nutritionist.
I started seeing the nutritionist last October and started keeping a food journal. The foundation of what I eat is a fairly healthy diet with clean meats, lots of veggies and a few fruits. I try and stay away from gluten and dairy as I don’t feel well when eating it. More on this later.
One of the first things the Nutritionist did was to have food sensitivity lab work completed. I had one food I was allergic to and only had a short list of foods that I was sensitive to, but they were foods that I usually ate almost every day. As I started an an elimination diet, she added supplements that would continue to heal the gut.
By January of this year, I was beginning to feel good. I had been on the new diet, which removed the 8 foods that I was most sensitive to, and I was beginning to add back in one food at a time.
And then, the stress in my life skyrocketed and my health plummeted. I came down with a terrible cold for several weeks in February, then I had a hiatal hernia for 3 weeks before it was diagnosed (a chiropractor was able to manually adjust it.) I then had to go on a strong herbal regiment to kill parasites in my stomach and now I’m recovering from a bad case of strep and the psoriasis is flaring up again.
Not only am I wiped out, I’m discouraged.
What to do when you’re chronically sick
I’ll be honest. While I mentioned that the foundation of my diet is fairly healthy, I have a sugar addiction. Once the stress level started to rise, I looked for comfort in chocolate, cookies, and pastries. Sugar is a strange addiction. I ate it looking to calm the stress and it only caused more.
All of this sickness has made me stop and take an account of what’s happening. I’ve decided that I may be hampered by too much information and too many resources. I have a contact list of natural health practitioners which includes chiropractic, massage, acupuncture, herbalist, biofeedback, and a therapist. I go from office to office looking to feel better, and I do for a short period of time, but nothing is long term.
After this past week of being so sick with strep, it’s time to stop the madness and get serious about taking control of my health. There’s only one common denominator in all of this and that is me and I’m pretty sure that I’m the one that’s keeping me from getting well. It’s time to take responsibility.
The stress in my life hasn’t subsided, and in fact, it’s getting worse, but I’m starting on a new journey this week. I have an appointment with a Functional Medicine doctor. His office includes chiropractic, acupuncture, a nutritionist, and neurofeedback, all in one place. I’m not sure what to expect, but I’ll be blogging about my journey. I hope that maybe someone else will benefit from my story.
